Metal Guitar of the Week - Tony Iommi's Old Boy Jaydee SG Custom

This week's metal guitar is Tony Iommi's Jaydee SG Custom, also known as the "Old Boy." This is Tony's main electric guitar, both live and in studio. He has a lot of Gibson SG customs but Tony don't give two shits about them. The "Old Boy" is his guitar workhorse because he prefers its tone more than anything else. IMO, I think there is also some sentimental emotions involved.

According to Iommi's website, "Old Boy" was built in Birmingham, England by John Diggins, now known for his Jaydee Custom guitars. The guitar has a distinguishable distressed maroon finished with Iommi's cross inlay trademarks. The pickups were hot-rodded by Diggins himself. The bridge is Schaller and the machine heads are Sperzels. The body and neck are mahogany, I believe, and the the fretboard is ebony.

Although "Old Boy" looks grotesque and terribly old, it has a very dark but sweet tone. I bet the frets feel like heaven! Iommi plays the guitar as if it's a part of his body. Just watch the Heaven and Hell DVD and you'll see "Old Boy" in action.

Unfortunately, this guitar is one of a kind. There is no way in the world you can get an exact replica.

Metal Guitar of the Week - Jackson Kevin Bond Signature Rhoads

The first Metal Guitar of the Week is Jackson's Kevin Bond Signature Electric Guitar. I've been craving and dreaming about this guitar in the last couple of days. Randy Rhoades type guitars are known for their alder bodies, maple necks and sharktooth inlays. But the Jackson Kevin Bond Signature guitar, although shaped as a Rhoades should be, is a totally different beast! It has a mahogany body and neck, with some wicked pentragram inlays on the its beautiful ebony fretboard. It's like a Les Paul in a different and more wicked form. Additionally, it has a "Tony Iommi Seymour Duncan pickup." Some people say that this pickup is a Seymour Duncan custom now renamed as the El Diablo. It is now associated with Anthrax's riffer Scott Ian. As we all know, Iommi now endorses pickups for Gibson.

From what I read, this guitar is Made in Japan. Of course, there is the custom shop US-made but it costs more than the Japanese-made version.

Its price ranges from $1,199.99 to $1,769.99.

Is it available in the Philippines? No! Maybe Yupangco (Yamaha) will make a special order for you because they sell Jackson brands but it'll cost you 1/4 more than its original price. Yeah, it's another reason why the Philippines suck ass. The only sure way you can get one is if you have a relative in the United States or Japan or any other country where it is available. As you know, Musician's Friend, Guitar Center and other corporate online guitar stores only ship their shits in the United States.

I want this guitar! A fucking all mahogany + ebony fretboard Rhoades is hard to come by. If ever I'd find someone selling it second-hand for 20 to 30 grand, I'd get it in a hearbeat!

Damn, it's fucking 2:45 am and I'm still awake...typing here in front of my computer. I've been doing some research lately about Community-acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (whaever it is) for my current work project. I've managed to collect some useful materials but my mind ain't ready to read them all yet. All I'm thinking about lately is how I can buff my blog aside from posting demos and rare albums. I just thought about featuring metal electric guitars, since I'm personally addicted to guitars. Every week, I'd feature an electric guitar model that has "Metalness" painted all over it. Yes, it'd be total guitar worship and it'd be a perfect way for me to control my constant craving for wicked gears .

Fuck yeah it's a good idea so I'll give it a go starting today! If I can't buy it, I'll just feature it, haha! Oh crap, it's nearly 3:00 am! Got to go back to work!

Scorpions - Rock You Like a Hurricane (Live in Wacken 2006)

Fuck yeah! Scorpions! If you're the type of metal head who finds Scorpions cheesy, well I can't blame you 'cause they're really the mainstream type. But me, I respect Scorpions for their songwriting, charisma and showmanship! Scorpions is classic! Rock You Like a Hurricane, although one of their most raped songs, is still fun to listen to sometimes.

Oh yeah, one more thing, I really envy each and everyone of the million-something fans who went to that Wacken event! I wish I could go to Wacken in the future...but yeah, it's a sad reality that I'm just an average guy living in a shitty, politically-controlled, apathetic country called the Philippines.

Defeated Sanity - Hideously Disembodied (Live)

Another band that really fills my metal hunger. As its name implies, Defeated Sanity is indeed pure insanity! It seems that these guys have lost their minds with those unpredictable riffs. This is just a bootleg video from some poster in Youtube. But you can already hear that the sound quality on that gig is terrifyingly insane. Hails!

Necrophagist - Fermented Offal Discharge (live)

This band is a killer! Mohamed is an insane genius who just started up with home recording. Necrophagist, in itself, is not sell-out by any means. A lot of narrow-minded people there thinks that this band is selling out. Well, their not! It's just that Mohamed's combination of brutal riffs and melodic neo-classical licks caused so much ruckus that even people without any metal background started listening to them. Even Mohamed's Ibanez endorsement is not a sign of selling out. No guitarist would reject a guitar endorsement deal! Necrophagist fucking owns! I admit that there was a time I got tired of them but after listening to a bunch of new underground monstrosities, I realized that Necrophagist belongs there on the top of the ranks like Baal or Astaroth or something, lol! A high ranking demon trampling down the peons to their brutal demise!

But on the downside, Mohamed needs to get a live vocalist. I think his voice lacks the power that instrument-less vocalists have. Think Defeated Sanity. Think Cannibal Corpse. You get the picture.
